Photographs of wildlife have always helped people feel connected to the natural world. A kangaroo at dusk, a turtle heading for the sea, a glider drifting through moonlight. These images inspire awe and remind people of the diversity of life shared across Australian landscapes.
Drones have added a new dimension to this. They can reveal patterns, colours and behaviours that are impossible to see from the ground and can help build understanding of wildlife in ways that were once out of reach.
Drones also come with responsibility. The old saying “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints” no longer covers it. A drone can disturb wildlife even when the operator never sets foot near the animal.
When getting too close causes harm
Many people assume drones are non intrusive because they do not involve touching wildlife. In reality, drones can disrupt natural behaviour just as easily as a person on foot. Noise, shadows, sudden movement or repeated passes can cause animals to stop feeding, waste energy fleeing, abandon resting sites or leave young unattended.
A simple rule applies: if a drone changes an animal’s behaviour, it is too close. Increasing altitude, backing off or leaving the area entirely reduces the risk of disturbance.
Respecting habitats matters too
Drone photography is not only about the animal in the frame. It is also about the environment beneath it. Flying too low over dunes, roosting sites, wetlands or nesting areas can cause disturbance even if the animal is not visible.
Sensitive habitats deserve space, as do the species that rely on them for feeding, breeding, shelter and movement.
The social media problem
Recreational drone use has exploded. Travel blogs and social media encourage people to fly lower, closer and longer than they should. Viral content drives behaviour. When one person posts a close shot of a whale or turtle, many others try to replicate it.
Sharing exact locations can unintentionally direct people to rare, nesting or vulnerable wildlife. This increases disturbance, harassment and risk. Wildlife should never pay the price for someone’s holiday content.
Wildlife selfies from the sky
Drone selfies with wildlife are becoming more common and are dangerous. Close range drone footage normalises unsafe behaviour and encourages others to copy it. It can cause distress, defensive reactions or injury and may breach Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulations and wildlife protection laws.
If getting the shot requires flying close, chasing, circling or hovering over a wild animal, it should not be taken.
When drones help wildlife
Drones are not inherently harmful. When used responsibly, they are powerful conservation tools. They can detect rare species, monitor habitat change, support rescue operations and provide reliable data for environmental decisions.
The NSW Wildlife Drone Hub is a strong example. With thousands of flights and more than ten thousand animals detected, the Hub has shown how trained pilots, validated methods and thermal cameras can survey complex terrain with minimal disturbance. Their work supports koala conservation, landscape scale monitoring and long term planning.
Science that brings wildlife into focus
Across Australia, researchers are using drones to detect species that were once almost impossible to find. Conservation scientist Dr Ryan Witt and his team have developed real time thermal detection methods for koalas, greater gliders and squirrel gliders. Their work is referenced in the NSW Koala Strategy and the Biodiversity Assessment Method, helping ensure wildlife is counted, mapped and considered in decisions that shape their future.
Thermal drones are also transforming forest monitoring. Research in Victoria shows drones can detect all expected arboreal mammals in native forests, often ten times more efficiently than spotlighting. They help answer critical questions about habitat use, forest age and species recovery.
Species specific challenges
Drone monitoring is not simple. Each species presents unique challenges. Work led by Dr Lachlan Howell highlights this clearly.
Kangaroos require flight heights that balance resolution with disturbance. Koalas require validation to avoid false positives when other species or habitat features mimic their thermal signatures. Waterbirds require high resolution imagery without causing birds to flush or change behaviour.
These challenges cannot be solved by recreational drone users. They require trained operators, scientific protocols and careful optimisation.
Tracking wildlife with radio telemetry
Some species are too small or too fast for thermal detection alone. Wildlife Drones, founded by Australian conservation scientist Dr Debbie Saunders, uses drone mounted radio telemetry to track tagged animals across large landscapes. Their system can track up to forty animals at once, from endangered birds to invasive species.
The technology combines a lightweight radio receiver payload, a suitable drone platform and a base station. Because drones can fly over fences, rivers, roads and ridges, they can follow animals wherever they go without disturbing them. Thermal imaging can be used to locate untagged animals, which are then captured, tagged and tracked using radio telemetry.
Rules that protect wildlife
CASA’s national drone rules apply everywhere in Australia, but they are only the baseline. Every state, territory and council adds additional restrictions. Some parks prohibit drones entirely. Others require permits. Some areas have seasonal closures, marine mammal separation distances or major event exclusion zones.
Breaking these rules can lead to substantial penalties. In New South Wales, approval is required before launching, landing or operating a drone in a park, and some parks exclude drones altogether. South Australia prohibits recreational drone use in parks, with permits only considered for scientific research or commercial filming. Queensland allows drone use in many parks but expects operators to follow CASA rules and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Western Australia allows recreational drone use in parks without prior approval, but operators must comply with CASA rules, state legislation, wildlife separation distances, cultural values and emergency restrictions. They are requested to contact district offices before flying to avoid conflicts with park management operations.
The future of drone conservation
Drone technology is advancing rapidly. Artificial intelligence is helping classify species, estimate populations and analyse habitat use. Machine learning is improving detection accuracy. Vertical take off and landing aircraft may one day allow long range surveys and larger data collection.
None of this replaces the need for training, licensing, approvals and ethical practice. Technology can support conservation, but it cannot substitute for responsibility.
A simple truth
Drones can help wildlife. Drones can harm wildlife. The difference lies in how they are used and who is flying them.
Wildlife deserves admiration and restraint. It deserves to be seen, valued and protected. With responsible drone use, people can celebrate the beauty of the natural world while ensuring animals are left in peace to live their lives.
