Reading the Skin of a Stranded Humpback

When the humpback stranded at Port Kennedy, the surf told only part of the story. The skin told the rest. This whale did not arrive on the beach as a healthy migrant that suddenly lost its way. Its skin carried the signs of long decline. Every mark on its back was a clue to what had been happening inside its body before it reached the shoreline.

The peppered pattern of whale lice

Across the dorsal ridge and upper flanks the skin showed dense pock marks. These tiny pits are associated with cyamids, often called whale lice. Healthy humpbacks keep parasite numbers low because constant movement and strong water flow flush the skin. When a whale slows down or becomes weak, cyamids multiply. The Port Kennedy whale had a heavy load, which suggests it had been compromised for weeks or months before stranding.

Pale barnacle scars on thinning skin

Mixed with the pock marks were larger pale spots. These were barnacle attachment scars. Barnacles detach when the skin thins or circulation drops. They also fall away when a whale rubs against sand or reef. The number of scars on this whale showed that its skin had lost integrity long before it reached the beach.

Mottling, sloughing and the loss of sheen

Healthy humpback skin has an even tone and a slight sheen. The Port Kennedy whale’s skin looked dull, rough and unevenly coloured. Some areas were sloughing faster than others. These changes occur when circulation to the skin declines and the outer layers begin to die back. Once a whale is stuck in shallow water the process accelerates because it can no longer regulate temperature or maintain normal hydration.

Behaviour that matches the skin

A whale in this condition cannot dive properly or generate the power needed to move away from shore. It often stays near the surface, rolls in the waves and drifts with the currents. These behaviours match the skin story. They show an animal in late stage physiological failure rather than a whale that simply made a wrong turn.

What strandings tell us about the wider corridor

A whale in poor condition invites us to look at food availability offshore, cumulative stress from vessel traffic and the changing conditions along the coastal corridor. The skin of the Port Kennedy whale was not just a surface problem. It was a visible record of deeper pressures that began far from the beach.
