Water Clarity Snapshot
Community Monitoring Across Local Waterways
The project engages local community members in practical, hands-on monitoring of water clarity across the estuary, lake, channel and coastline. Volunteers use simple turbidity tubes to collect monthly readings and record basic observations. The information gathered is compiled into a seasonal “Water Clarity Snapshot”, helping the community understand how rainfall, runoff, tides and human activity influence the health of local waterways.
Why This Project Is Needed
Local waterways are central to community identity and biodiversity, yet many residents are unaware of how quickly water quality can shift. A community-driven monitoring program builds understanding, strengthens stewardship and creates a useful baseline dataset that can guide future care and management.
Key Activities
- Selecting safe and accessible monitoring sites
- Providing sampling kits and short training sessions
- Conducting monthly community sampling
- Collating data into a public seasonal snapshot
- Sharing results through social media, fact sheets and community events
Expected Outcomes
- Greater community awareness of waterway health
- A baseline dataset for clarity across multiple waterway types
- Stronger community connection to local waterways
- A repeatable model for ongoing citizen-science monitoring
Estimated Budget: $5000
The budget covers equipment, printing, volunteer support, workshop delivery, data collation and project coordination.
