Our Park is Coming to Life!

21 Feb 2025

The transformation of our local park has reached an exciting milestone today—mulch has officially been laid by the council! What was once lifeless, hydrophobic sand with no nutrients has now been given the foundation for flourishing growth. This vital step will bring us closer to creating a vibrant space for our community to enjoy.

A Much-Needed Boost for Our Soil

For far too long, the park's soil has been nothing but an expanse of white and yellow sand, offering little hope for any greenery to thrive. However, the nutrient-rich mulch sourced by Polly Hammond from the Council is here to help. Once we get some rain, the nutrients from the mulch will start to seep into the soil, providing an essential boost to support the growth of plants and trees. This will create not only a more inviting park but also a healthier environment for local flora and fauna.

A Small Delay, But Worth the Wait

It’s been a process to get to this stage. Due to the borer beetle outbreak in Perth, several trees had to be destroyed, and mulch transportation was heavily regulated in the quarantine zone. Previously, the council sourced mulch from north of Mandurah, but with the restrictions in place, Polly had to find a new supplier further south. It took a little longer, but the effort has paid off. Now the park’s soil is ready for planting, though we’ll need rain before we can take the next step.

What’s Next? Planting Day Is Coming!

The next stage of the project is all about getting our hands dirty—literally! Planting 120 trees and plants is no small feat, and the community's help will be instrumental. Due to the dry conditions, it’s important to wait for some proper rainfall to allow the mulch to release its nutrients into the soil. Right now, the sand and mulch are still quite dry, but with some rain, we’ll be ready to dig in, likely in May or June.

We encourage everyone to pull out their gardening gloves and get ready to join in on planting day. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to work together and get involved. Kids, in particular, will love planting their own greenery and seeing it grow over the years. The sense of pride they’ll feel as they watch their plant thrive will be unforgettable. Plus, the idea of creating certificates with photos and labels of the kids' plants is sure to make the experience even more special.

Building a Greener Future Together

For now, we take a moment to appreciate how far we’ve come. The groundwork is quite literally being laid for a greener, more vibrant park that will be a source of pride for the entire community. Until planting day arrives, it’s a waiting game—but an exciting one!

Our park transformation is proof of what we can achieve when we come together. From the hard work of the council securing the mulch to the enthusiasm of the local community, this project has been a joint effort at every stage. And the best part? The fun has only just begun.

Stay tuned for updates and details about planting day. We can’t wait to see everyone out there creating a lush, inviting space for all to enjoy. Together, we’re turning this park into a thriving hub for our community—one plant at a time.
