Over recent months, a small group of passionate locals has been working steadily toward an exciting goal for Dawesville - the creation of a community-led Discovery Centre. What began as a simple idea has grown into a detailed concept, a formal proposal & a shared vision that is now in the hands of decision-makers across multiple levels of government & the environmental sector.
Why Dawesville Needs a Discovery Centre
Dawesville is surrounded by some of Western Australia’s most extraordinary natural assets: the Peel-Harvey Estuary, the Dawesville Channel, Yalgorup National Park, the Lake Clifton thrombolites, and a coastline that shifts character every few kilometres. Despite this incredible diversity, there is no central place for people to learn about it, explore it, or connect with it.
The Discovery Centre aims to change that by becoming a welcoming hub where locals, visitors, students and researchers can come together to understand the landscapes that make Dawesville unique.
What the Discovery Centre Will Offer
The vision is to create a place that celebrates learning, curiosity and community connection. The Centre would bring together:
- Environmental education: hands-on learning about our estuary, dunes, wetlands and coast
- Community science: opportunities for locals to contribute to real research
- Interactive exhibits: showcasing Dawesville’s wildlife, geology, culture and history
- Workshops and events: from school programs to citizen-science nights
- A shared home for local groups: a space for Coastcare, volunteers and community projects
At its heart, the Centre is about connection. Connecting people to place and connecting Dawesville to the wider environmental & research community.
How It Will Benefit the Community
Dawesville is growing & with growth comes the need for spaces that build identity, belonging and understanding. A Discovery Centre would:
- Support families: offering free or low-cost activities and learning experiences
- Boost local pride: celebrating the landscapes and wildlife that make Dawesville special
- Strengthen stewardship: helping people understand how to care for our fragile ecosystems
- Attract visitors: creating a new point of interest for eco-tourism & education
- Provide a community anchor: a place to gather, learn, volunteer & collaborate
Dawesville’s Ecosystems: A Living Classroom
Dawesville is a natural meeting point of estuarine, coastal, wetland, dune, woodland & marine environments. This diversity makes our region a living classroom for:
- climate resilience research
- coastal management studies
- estuary health monitoring
- wildlife conservation projects
- community-led environmental stewardship
A Discovery Centre would give researchers, students & community groups a central place to collaborate, share findings and build knowledge that benefits not just Dawesville, but other coastal & estuarine communities across Australia.
Who Has the Proposal Now?
The completed proposal has been formally submitted to a wide range of stakeholders, including:
- City of Mandurah Council
- The Mayor
- Local Councillors
- State Members of Parliament
- Peel Development Commission
- Department of Water and Environmental Regulation
- Environmental and community groups across the region
The proposal is being read, discussed & considered - and that alone is a significant step forward. We’ve also had interest from the University of Western Australia, with research departments keen to see how the project develops and where they may be able to collaborate.
In short: people are paying attention.
Funding Pathways We’re Exploring
While we wait for formal responses, we’re also identifying potential funding opportunities. These include:
- environmental education grants
- community infrastructure funding
- coastal and estuary management grants
- research partnerships
- and philanthropic support for regional community projects
The aim is to build a strong, diverse funding base so the Centre can grow sustainably & remain community-focused.
What Happens Next?
Right now, we’re in the "waiting game" phase - the part where the proposal is in the hands of decision-makers, and we give them the time & space to review it properly.
While we wait, our next steps include:
- continuing to refine the concept based on feedback
- building community awareness & support
- strengthening partnerships with researchers & local groups
- and preparing the groundwork for future grant applications
This is the quiet but important part - the part where momentum builds behind the scenes.
The Dawesville Discovery Centre is still in its early stages, but the vision is strong, the community interest is growing & the conversations are happening. With patience, persistence and collaboration, we’re laying the foundations for something that could shape Dawesville’s future for decades to come.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far - and to everyone cheering from the sidelines. This is just the beginning.
